Ex convent of Tiripetío

If you come from Morelia to Patzcuaro when you enter Tipetío you will see on your right side an old sign that says the entrance to this former convent, when I take a triptych and I thank Lic. Elizabeth Moreno Carachure for the information, who is the director of this ex-tiripetio3convento and tells us that once the evangelization of these lands began by the Franciscan order, the encomendero of Tiripetío determined to call the Augustinian priests to preach Christian doctrine.

He favored them by building the church and the convent. In order to fulfill their evangelizing work, the fathers were named Fray Juan de San Román and Fray Diego de Chavez and Alvarado, this last nephew of the encomendero, the first convent was a modest adobe house with several cell-like rooms. Subsequently began the construction of a strong building of two floors, all of basaltic stone and quarry. In the architectural field, the chronicles proclaimed, the convent of Tiripetío was considered like the most finished work of the province of Michoacán and even of all New Spain.

To whose figure it is owed the good reputation of the College of Tiripetío.

This scholar had the distinction of having studied at two great Spanish universities of that time: that of Alcalá de Henares and that of Salamanca, having been a pupil of the great thinker Francesco de Vittoria. Another value that gives the Ex-convent an incomparable value is to have founded the first library of all New Spain, consisting of five hundred works of theology, physics, geometry, history and philosophy. Texts of St. Augustine, St. Thomas, St. Bernard, St. Geronimo, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Euclid, among others, were housed in its walls.
